It’s an exciting time of year for kids as the school year winds down! Congrats and good luck to all the kids moving up to middle school or high school—welcome to the bottom of the totem pole again!

But the group I always look out for around now is the one that’s done with school: the grade 12s moving on. Based on what I’ve learned, here’s some advice and heads up. Those people you’re great friends with now? You probably won’t stay close for another three years, and your new friends are likely to be your coworkers.

Many will suggest moving away for school to gain independence, but it’s insanely cheaper to keep living with your parents. As you step into adulthood, remember that drinking every weekend gets expensive, going for drives with your friends is pricey, and even groceries will drain your wallet. Just be ready to have no money!
